Wild Wild North
Kenya’s Wild Wild North is the only Equatorial desert on planet Earth. This has shaped its endemic flora, fauna and tribal characters. The various landscape testifies the generous verve of Creation. Lake Turkana oasis in the middle of Chalbi dessert is perhaps the cradle of mankind.
The call of this ancient wild land wakes up the spirit of a raw adventure, where you can strip layer after layer of comfort and let it ascend you level after level of purity. Go away from cozy home to another continent. No embassy, no insurance, no helicopter rescue, no SOS, no GSM, no retrieve. Fry in the scorching sun, sweat to climb a hill, watch for snakes, find a rock and jump from it before the next strong gust hits. Take any climb and stay high because there aren’t decent landings in the thorny carpet around, except perhaps a dry river bed after 20 km. Add some hungry and thirsty wild animals plus some tribes killing each other for their cows and limited resources… Keeps staying high, the coolness at 3-4k lets you think sharp. Use these precious moments to avoid mistakes; because the paranoia creeps beneath the lower you sink. From all the bad scenarios pick the best one and improvise a lot, like in desert blues and jazz.
Sounds crazy, mental, but it’s possible, survivable and then becomes addictive. On 19th February we got lucky to fly from Ololokwe to Maralal, across Samburu lands, using only public transport for the start and the end. The more protective layers you remove the more raw the adventure becomes until you reach the purest form of flying – you, your favorite wing and a friend to share with.
