All these years of exploring Kenya I was skeptical about Victoria lake region, expecting to be hot, humid, malaria infested and stable because of the lake breeze.
Lake Victoria is the biggest in Africa bordering Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania. One of the sources of Nile river at 1000 m above mean sea level. The lake westward breeze meets the equatorial easterly trade winds and their convergence creates the Masai Mara and Serengeti wild life heaven.
After the intensive 2025 Kenya adventure tour, SkyNomad organized a team building discovery of new paragliding playgrounds. The result is not only the strengthening of SkyNomad spirit but also the discovery of a new jewel of paragliding in Kenya!
Despite my 25+ years of adventure flying experience, here I’ve experienced my strongest ever thermal of 7 m/s average lifting you 3,500 meters over the ground or 4700 meters over the sea level. You can fly over the lake or even land on some of the islands. The rugged coastline and volcanic mountains are quite enigmatic. Flying a paraglider in these strong conditions was surprisingly smooth, probably due to the humid air. Inland convergences offer light winds with plenty of roads and landings. Crossing Ruma National Park is easy. +100 km flights to Kissii or Kisumu are also within reach.
Kenyan side of lake Victoria can be a world class paragliding competition arena!
Next year we’ll include it in SkyNomad Kenya 2026 adventure tour and hopefully first competition will follow…
