North Kenya paragliding 2024
North Kenya is a remote semi-desert full of thorny, poisonous or dangerous stuff and tribal conflicts.
The vast carpet of thorny trees or bushes limits the landing places to the few remote roads and dry river beds. Paragliding take offs are mostly naked rocks but even they have scales and cracks which can easily cut your lines. The handling of the wing is additionally challenged by the usual strong and gusty winds.
The hot and dry climate means good weather when it’s raining in the rest of Kenya but the cloud bases are not that high. There are hyenas, lions or bad temper elephants, snakes and scorpions.
But the worst can be the people. There are frequent fights, cattle stealing and politics between the tribes. The El Nino prolonged the November rainy season up to January making the arid areas green and the desert areas looking like savanna. If there is more grass and water they should be less fights for resources. Still, before our trip there was some violence near Baringo lake. We decided to fly inside Samburu territory, away from borders with other tribes. Still, we had to cancel going deeper into the wild west as fresh violence erupted in Baragoi.
Despite all, North Kenya is unique and beautiful. Rising paragliding explorations to the next level.
