Crossing the Equator
Apart from Kerio valley Out and Returns (latest record is 300+ km), a new classic Kenyan paragliding route has been established – crossing the Equator, flying along the Great Rift Valley.
Georgi Djolev did it first in 2022, Nikolay Yotov did it in 2024 and now in 2025, starting from Iten.
The difficult moments were the crossing of Kerio Valley and climbing in the lee of Kabernet range. Crossing Kabernet against the wind is also not easy as there are few landings over the wide rugged mountain top. On the other side, the carpet of thorny bushes limits the landings further which restrict the search of thermals. Flying downwind, along Rift Valley, is pretty straightforward, enjoying the view of lake Baringo and Bogoria, but mind that near the ground winds often increase throughout the day.
Menengai volcano crater near Nakuru can be a challenge, especially in stronger winds pushing you towards Nakuru National park with the lake and the lions 😉
Finally, the flight ended just before lake Elemenatita, because of big shadows.
